From the current issue of Renegade Radio:

Cobras Cobras Cobras
The Royal Paul Beatdown
Old Life Records

Nothing is sacred in the world of Cobras Cobras Cobras.  They favour yelping and chanting over singing, dissonant chords over pleasing harmonies, waltz tempos over pulsing four-four timing, and Rhodes pianos over bass guitars.  If you’re familiar with this style they’ve been honing, then nothing on their new record The Royal Paul Beatdown will come as much of a surprise.  Not to say that it’s unoriginal; in fact, it’s quite the opposite.  Their sound is refreshing, effortless, and sassy.  On this release, they’ve learned when to get louder and when to restrain themselves, and the quality of the compositions have greatly benefited from this.  It’d be tough to find a better riff than the one climbing and sinking through “Dogcatcher,” or to dislike the way that  “Tall, Dark, & Gruesome” builds up from a jam on the Rhodes to a wailing festival of cymbals and overdriven guitar.  The musicianship on this record can’t be beat.  Sloppy or tight, major or minor, it’s all irrelevant; they’re just so much fun it’s hard to be dissatisfied.  Forget everything you’ve already heard and let these local dudes invade your ears with their wild, wild noise.

M Blanket - Even the Score and Processing Yor (side A of the Safety 7”, 1994)

Colourbook by Jill, 2006

Will anyone remember Chet in ten years?  Will the only semblance of a Chet legacy be used copies of Fight Against Darkness at Lyle’s place?  Will anyone listen to the Colourbook CD in ten years?  Imagine the time, effort, and money invested in these two bands, and then multiply it by 1000.  Imagine that this number represents the total sum of the Victoria music scene from 1980 until the present.  It’s all relevant and seemingly important to the proponents of a scene at a certain time.  And it is important for a variety of reasons, such as the provision of community for young people.  However, although there might be a fluid progression of bands (one leading to the next), the personal fragmentation from band to band and year to year results in community identities that are fleeting and temporary.

I mention this because M Blanket is a great band, but they are ancient history.  A precursor to other bands you may have heard of, specifically Daddy Hands, M Blanket was a Victoria band that was active from 1992 until 1994.  They released two 7” records on Slow to Burn Records, and appeared on a number of compilations.  It’s difficult to judge the band’s popularity so far removed from the original context, but M Blanket probably meant something to a number of people in 1994.  Their music is still somewhat available (thanks, Internet), but this is a band that most people in Victoria in 2009 haven’t heard of.

I don’t mean to assign significance to 1994, and I’m not trying to say that 2009 is best.  My point is this: “underground” communities are temporary but have an infinite number of lifetimes.  Pop culture trends are notoriously fleeting, and youth culture, often the basis of local music scenes, is especially fickle.  Is it necessary to be aware of past bands from Victoria?  No.  It’s neat, though, to listen to M Blanket.  A band from Victoria !

The All Your Ears Can Hear project, released two years ago, directly addresses the idea of fleeting community identity.  The project is a good idea, but its focused nostalgia is probably the product of the same thing that inspired this essay:  a projected fear of getting old.  A Jerk Ward reunion?  Again?  Ok.
